Players have stepped up this offseason, will it translate in the regular season? Looking at some cut candidates. And a deep dive into the performance of Jimmy Garoppolo.
Well written..well analyzed but I think it's fair to analyze deeper into offensive line play and WR play. Jimmy threw a ton of danger passes last year but the WRs on this team did him zero favors. He threw the least number of deep passes but was the most accurate on them and the offense as a whole, was more explosive than the chiefs last year. The play was not all on Jimmy
When you have Julio Jones or Andre Johnson you can write up some wicked plays. KS understands how to put the offense in the best position to win. Last year this offense had bad WRs and the offensive line play specifically pass protection going into the the season was suspect. KS corrected for that
thats true but Julio Jones as a #1 WR isnt so different from having George Kittle as a #1 TE.. obviously WRs impact passing game more... and your offensive line assessment is fair. It definitely was not all Jimmy. But a lot of the stats are misleading when it comes to Jimmy.. especially yards/attempt which makes him feel like a gunslinger or some one who targets downfield consistently, when in reality it was far from that.
Was that part of the offense? Yeah for the most part, and YAC is also a skill that QBs help with ball placement. Jimmy did his job. Its just this offense goes where Jimmy does, and in order for JImmy to step up, Shanahan needs to trust him fully, and Jimmy needs to trust himself fully. You know?
I think that Jimmy can really improve under pressure now that he doesn't have a knee brace. In 2017 he was decent outside the pocket and we saw a bit of that last season in the TD pass to Kittle vs the Rams in Week 16.
the best throw i saw from Jimmy all season was that throw at the end of the 1st half in the Super Bowl. i havent seen anything like him since. But you are right, his mobility will greatly improve his play under pressure which will be welcomed this season
Very nice article. I agree with a lot of what was said, and people are always quick to point out all the drops from WR affecting his play (true) but turn a blind eye to how many dropped INT he benefited from.
He's definitely got a lot to improve, but he has a lot going for him. I think he's on a short leash, if he doesn't improve ball security and perform better under pressure this year, and God forbid be able to complete a deep pass that the receiver doesn't have 15 yards separation and has to stop and wait a second or two for it to reach him, we should probably look elsewhere, or at least draft someone to compete
Well, now I’m confused. I thought Jimmy was awesome—who are “advanced stats” anyways? Now I have to wait and see. Field Gulls would love this article. 😢 But really nice article again Riqo. Lotsa typos this time, so I’m getting more comfortable.😉
I would suggest perhaps breaking up such things as this into multiple articles. This looks like WAY too much work to just dump into one article... reward yourself with doing this much effort by making it like 3 articles, sometimes it's all about quantity. ;)
I thought about it, but i also want to lure people in with quality first.. when we get a consistent reader base, i will start going quantity as well. probably be next week
One thing you left out on Jimmy, well two, though his beauty has probably been discussed enough. To our knowledge, he's never diddled a goat. A quality that should be respected and appreciated in your teams QB.
Quite a terrific post and yes, it quite clearly reveals the other side of the coin. I like JG helluva lot and I want him to be our Franchise QB. This year should be the one where he steps up and proves that he can be one. Some of those advanced Stats are absolutely damning. And that point, about the Chiefs waiting till the 4th Q to unleash all hell, gives me some chills. I fervently wish JG can get over that loss and also work towards over-coming these un-settling flaws in his game
And an extremely well-written and balanced article. No blind homerism but an objective analysis laying it out thread-bare so that one can make conclusions sifting through the data
I wonder if we could look at the same advanced analytics from those 5 games in 2017 and extrapolate them to 16 games, then compare them to 2019 to kind of put to rest how the ACL injury affected him. Just based on the eye test, he was so much more mobile and slinging the ball all over the field those 5 games, but last year he looked statuesque sometimes. I guess he was also playing with a limited playbook back then and maybe Shanahan didn't know his deep ball deficiencies to not call those plays yet? Either way, great article and I think some things we all kind of knew and had accepted as "not great but still the best thing to come along since that guy named Young" lol
Very nice. A great deal of good statistics. However, I would appreciate if you have analysed one, for me the most important statistics - W vs L. It is not the system - same coach went 3-13 w/o Jimmy the previous year. Clarification, please (I am just a simple fan, not very knowledgeable!). And from abroad. Thank you.
Wow! Love to see some more abroad fans over here! And yes, you are correct: Jimmy wins, and he does it a lot. Shanahan has been terrible without Garoppolo at QB. but at the same time, more is needed from Garoppolo to really take a step forward. I will do another segment on Jimmy later this week!

For sure. JG def needs polishing I'd like to see him hit outside the numbers, avoid throwing at defenders and maybe take off and run once in awhile.
Hes got some elusiveness too, id like to see him do it as well

haha, at one point i was proof reading and the words were blurring, and at that point i gave up
Most outstanding, Sir Riqo...

Good job on this (by this, I mean all of this) Riqonator!

Indeed, this is the best quality of Jimmy
😂
Didn’t call him “Jimmy Pornstar” either ... (can’t actually post on FG with out that correction. )
Awesome article, a lot of this is ringing true...
Thanks for the compliments
