FanPost Author: SportyMiner + Roster Projection: Riqonator -- Evaluating the roster, looking at some candidates to surprise, and a full roster projection including practice squad.
Hokit is supposed to be very good at carrying the rock, unlike Juice. And, by all accounts, he has been holding his ground during the TC. He could be thereason we might let Juice walk when his contract runs out with us.
Agree. For me it comes down to who's better between he and Dwelley. I think Hokit has the higher ceiling, and the fact he's a better backup to Juice if we need one is another edge. He's also a better blocker, and his being more physical bodes well for Special Teams also. Lastly, I feel like we've got a better chance of slipping Dwelley to the PS than Hokit.
Excellent write-up, SportyMiner & Riqonator!! Most of the Roster spots are realistic.
Now, going as per the Positions:
OL: Tom Compton brings nothing but experience and that, to me, is totally useless given how he has fared thus far in TC. Shades of Jordan Devey. Colton McKivitiz is ahead of the game, if Brunskill is playing Center. I've pretty much resigned myself to NOT seeing Richburg play for us and in that context want Brunskill to be developed as a Center
Skule is the swing Tackle and Compton could be the backup Guard. I wonder what happened to Ted Larsen whom we brought in for a workout?
TE/FB: Kittle, Reed, Woerner, Juice, Herrell. Might see Dwelley and Hoskit on the PS
WRs: I disagree on Jennings; he hasn't done enough and is a prime PS candidate. Aiyuk, Deebo, Taylor, Bourne, Pettis, Austin and maybe White (I'm really not sold out on him), if we go with 07 WRs. Though I could see Shanny going with higher TEs and lesser WRs
This year more than most, PS will be likely to be called up in 2nd half of season as injuries and covid cases increase - so the likes of Hokit, Jennings, Hasty etc. will get a chance if they continue to improve through the season's practices. That's what I'm banking on here - someone deep on the 53 or PS arriving in the later games and making a name for themselves.
Hokit and even Herrell will get chances, given that only Reed is out there to aprtner Kittle. Woener is the first backup and so I can see Herell get the nod at some point. An, you're right that PS players will get plety of opportunities this year
Sporty - You've committed a blashpemy!! Where in the world is Dee Ford? I couldn't find him on the DL. I understand that Thomas and Hyder are doing very well but don't you think it is a bit premature to cut Dee Ford!!
Yeah, I saw that but it sounded more like he can step into the role rather than as a Primary Position. A bit likeWard sliding to NCB (so we put him in italics). But that'sjust a minor quibble from my side, on an overall good article
Riq did a great job tidying up my article and made the roster prediction much cleaner and formatted, including properly designating 53 & PS (thanks Riq).
The roster lists starters for 1st down, in which Armstead would be on RDE not Ford, so he's italicised for 3rd downs/pass plays. It's just a way to format starters.
As far as ST is concerned, I'm not sure Pettis is up for doing PR duties; I honestly don't see it. KR - Yes, Austin seems to be a lock given how many reps he has got in the TC and how well he has been handling both the WR and KR duties.
Regarding your query about someone from OL doing the LS role - hmmm, don't knwo mate. Would you want an already thin OL to be handling LS duties and putting themselves in harm's way over some inconsequential punt return?
I think Riqo and I have similar views on LS but perhaps a different interpretation. I think your LS should be a backup Lineman, it shouldn't be a position on its own. It's a complete waste. He's a centre who can snap further and lower, its not much to ask is it. I'll bet the house the multi-talented Brunskill could do it.
I think is the future of NFL, erode the LS from the game, it's unnecessary. Make your OL practice it as part of their job. It's a specialist role that adds very little value - they're not Gould scoring 6pts a game!
Nice article gentlemen. Not much to argue with here, but I’ll have a try. Disagree about the Long Snapper after seeing that mess with Robbie Gould’s field goals through the first half of last season. He only missed one (tipped in the rain vs Ravens) after whatsisname came back from suspension. That’s too important to screw with imo.
Also Hockit has been doing a power of work through preseason with Juice being out, and I think he’s the legit backup there. Given Juice has missed games in each of the last two seasons, I’d have Hockit as my dark horse hero.
I was also wondering as I read if Witherspoon might have any trade value going into the season...?
Hockit is a great shout - he only started making real noise after I finished the article, but even so I think Woerner gets ahead of him this season in terms of backing up both FB and TE, whereas Hockit is FB/RB and he's not going to displace one of the RBs.
If he continues to progress, I see him taking Wilson's spot and being a true FB/RB hybrid which would be a great gain for the 53.
Are we officially giving up on Marcell Harris?? Didn’t see anything in the article or comments about him. Seems like the reports coming out of camp so far having Cyprien outperforming Harris, but Saleh had some fairly good praise about Harris the other day. Harris is raw but a good box safety and made a couple decent plays last year (minus the NO game lol)
I think he is injured. But, the overall body of work suggests that Cyprien is much better than Harris. Harris had his opportunities last year but failed to impress
Prediction: On the 53 from the TE/FB pool (5): Kittle, Reed, Woerner, Juice, Hokit. Dwelley & Harrell to the Practice Squad. You heard it here.
Bold
Hokit is one of those rare cases where I wish I could see a preseason game. Just to get some kind of idea on him. JHIOF

Poindexter and Jennings go straight to the PS
RBs: Jet, Coleman, Mostert and Wilson
Hasty is going to the PS
