(Santa Clara) - About an hour from now, the 49ers will take the field at Levi’s Stadium - in a weird setting for a primetime game. No fans, nothing, as the President of the United States has contracted COVID-19 - a surreal atmosphere, but regardless, an charged up one.
The 49ers have a handful of players making triumphant returns, including the best TE in the league, George Kittle facing off against one of his primary adversaries for that title, Zach Ertz. Also making his 2020 debut, Deebo Samuel, the physical South Carolina product. Samuel is slotted in as the #1 WR and brings some much needed toughness and explosive play ability to the 49ers offense, especially with the primary big play machine, Raheem Mostert, out with a sprained MCL. K’Waun Williams also is going to play today, a good sign for the 49ers pass defense that has been troubling without Richard Sherman and the EDGE rushers on the field. Williams is a top five slot CB in the league.
Additionally, a handful of new names will make their debuts, including Taybor Pepper, the replacement for long snapper Kyle Nelson who was released earlier this week. Jamar Taylor will also be active as the 49ers are short on corners. Ziggy Ansah also looks to become a factor after making his 49ers debut last week.

As for the Eagles - the most injury ravaged team in the NFL, for forever it feels like, they once again play us with minimal health. Future HOFer Jason Peters is out, as are wideouts Alshon Jeffery, DeSean Jackson, and Jalen Reagor (WR1, WR2, and WR3). The only team more injured than the 49ers, the Eagles will also miss talented TE Dallas Goedert, and all-pro interior lineman Brandon Brooks, one of the best guards in the league. They also will be missing Andre Dillard, former 1st round pick, on the offensive line. It is bad.
The key for the game: can the 49ers pressure Carson Wentz? Statistically one of the worst QBs in the league at the moment, Wentz is uber-talented but not playing up to his pedigree at the moment. The 49ers cannot allow him to get into rhythm, meaning they will have to manufacture pressure through blitzes and scheme. Expect some creativity from Saleh today.
Another name to watch: Miles Sanders. With all the weapons out, Sanders is the last true offensive weapon (not named Ertz) available for the Eagles. If he gets going, this game could get interested. Keep an eye on Jason Verrett who had a great game last week, and Jaquiski Tartt/Fred Warner, who both will be tasked with defending Zach Ertz.
Predictions by FTN Staff
SF 33 v. PHI 17Â - Shanafandom
Prediction: Niners win 33-17. If there’s anything Shanahan loves, it’s abusing linebackers weak in coverage. Mullens will have plenty of easy throws and can get around the Philly D-line. Carson Wentz doesn’t have the same luxury, especially with so few guys he can throw to.
Player of The Game: George Kittle. When he’s not blocking like a mad man, he’ll be exploiting weak linebackers and mediocre safeties. If Slay isn’t covering him, Kittle will be very difficult to stop in his return
SF 34 v. PHI 21Â - Patrick Holloway
Prediction: The Eagles are a mess and we've found the 49ers B-Squad is better than the NFC East A-Squad. Expect mad passing numbers from Nick Mullens who can feast on that atrocious secondary and a few sacks on him as well. This is in San Francisco and will be over with by halftime.
Player of The Game: George Kittle
SF 31 v. PHI 24Â - Riqonator
Prediction: The injuries make this closer. I think Wentz with the absence of our pass rush can get something going with his RB and TE - and that will be key on our LBs and S to stop. My biggest concern: the Eagles DL, particularly Fletcher Cox, may have a field day against most of our OL outside of Trent Williams. The 49ers need to protect Mullens, especially with the running game being so bad.
Player of the Game: Brandon Aiyuk. Slay will likely cover Samuel and Kittle for most of the game - those two will garner the most attention, and the LBs will be tasked with McKinnon. That leaves Aiyuk one v. one on most of his matchups, which I really like. Mullens already has a connection with him.
