History from NN days that helped form our community

Despite this being a very new blog, the community has been going on for a much longer time, since our days at NN. Currently, our older comments aren’t accessible and it’s much harder to explain old inside jokes/traditions that continued onto here and our Slack. In honor of former user TryandcatchVD, I thought I’d take a stab at a smaller version of his lore posts. I can’t get as detailed as him, but it’s been a while since one of these was made. So this will mostly focus on stuff from 2015 and later, around the time I started to lurk. Let me know what lore and classics I should cover next time!

Riqosuave

No, not Riqonator, the guy you all know and hopefully love. But Riqosuave is the inspiration for his username! OG Riqo was a legendary troll in the community. I first noticed him in a Reuben Foster thread, shortly after he was arrested in a domestic violence case. He quickly became known for not being supportive of women in DV cases, saying that beating a woman was often necessary, dismissing mental health issues, and more. Peak Riqo occurred when he posted his address, challenging user sjones to a fight.

He was also known for his terrible football opinions. He was a big fan of the Rams’ 2018 offseason, where they signed and traded for everybody. He complained about a lack of moves before free agency even began, spawning this meme AnD tHe RiQo FoNt (I want to say Mert invented the font, and my meme popularized it, but I can’t check the receipts).

Riqo got banned multiple times, and eventually received a permanent ban. He tried to come back several times, as well as trolling other SBN blogs. But his “influence” still lingers, especially with Riqonators’ username. But speaking of bans…

EDIT: OG Riqo, or someone claiming to be, tried to join the Discord server we made before we transitioned to Slack. The risk alone was worth a ban. And it happened in approximately ten seconds. And even if it wasn’t Riqo, that person knew the risk of pretending to be him.

RECkoning

If you applied Riqonator’s code, you may notice that 5 recs (likes) in the comments will cause the comment to be a gold color. This stems from SBN’s system, where each blog will have a different color and requirement to reach it. On the Seahawks blog, Field Gulls, 12 comments were needed to make a comment green. Field Gulls was also infamous for being ban-heavy, with many Niners fans being unable to interact there.

After the 2017 season, Niners fans were very optimistic after Jimmy Garoppolo began playing. Combine this with news that Richard Sherman and Michael Bennett were leaving Seattle, and we were very pleased. To top this off, former overlord David Fucillo was on vacation and could not control us this fateful day.

Niners Nation quickly got excited, and began to accumulate a lot of comments very quickly. Meanwhile Field Gulls was only getting a few more comments than NN, which we found hilarious since it was big news about their players. Despite Pat telling us not to troll, I cheekily suggested a “rec-bomb”, but I wanted to save an attack for later, during the regular season. Germinator quickly took over, and began to rec every comment on the Richard Sherman thread at FG, convincing everyone to join him. People joined, and soon began to be banned, on-by-one. Which was unexpected since people only rec’d and didn’t comment.

Later that day, a new thread appeared on NN about NFL draft prospect Will Hernandez wanting a bidet (a favorite topic of the instigator Germ). Much of the discussion was based on the event now known at the RECkoning, including the 14 users who were banned and the fact that Germ was somehow not banned. There were a lot of rec punts (I can’t RECall them all) and bad toilet jokes. The best part was when a FG mod came over, justifying the bans and the integrity of the rec system. This just further secured the disdain of FG, making the win against Seattle in 2018 so much sweeter.

BigMarisms

Another former user I want to highlight is Big Mar. But unlike Riqo, he’s someone I hope will migrate to FTN. Known for his broken English, and the multiple fake theories on who he could be, he’s become somewhat of a celebrity. Some of his favorite saying include

• Who loves da sack, baby? Mar loves to focus on the trenches. “Da” is also the replacement for “the” in every comment

• Demon Pass Rusher I think he was happy with Nick Bosa

• Marshmallows His favorite insult, and the reason why there are so many marshmallow and Ghostbuster emojis on our Slack

• Vedio Not really a saying, just typo that really persisted

• Enormed Enamored is too much work

• Ancient WTF has he ever won Kirk Cousins? He really didn’t want to sign Cousins, and he was very high on Patrick Mahomes from the beginning. Of course, anyone over 28 is considered to be ancient

• Inquiring minds want to know Code for Mar will ask the same question 10 times in one thread

• Did Kaepernick rescind his trade request? His favorite question of all time
